As if the yellow curry spice, turmeric does not have enough strings to it incredibly powerful health promoting bow, a new study has shown that its main component, curcumin can protect the liver from damage associated with Type II diabetes and obesity.

The incidence of a cirrhosis-like condition called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is increasing in line with the rapidly growing numbers of people diagnosed with obesity and Type II diabetes. NASH arises as a result of complex interactions between gut hormones such as leptin and certain genes that control the metabolism of fat and the deposition of fibrous tissue in the liver.

Scientists at St. Louis University in the USA have found that curcumin has the ability to re-activate protective liver cell genes that are suppressed by the abnormal metabolic processes associated with obesity and Type II diabetes. In this way turmeric’s curcumin is able to protect the liver cells from fat overload and fibrosis – characteristics of NASH.

Although most of the research into turmeric has focused on its remarkable protective effects in cancer and Alzheimer’s disease a previous study has shown that curcumin protects the liver of individuals who acquire the debilitating (and often fatal) water-borne tropical disease, schistosomiasis.

It really looks as though the discoveries of the health benefits of this wonder spice are never ending and, in my view, the overweight, those with diabetes and everyone else should take turmeric on a daily basis.

Oh yes! Don’t forget that turmeric works far better when it is taken with other spices such as black pepper and others. Turmeric may be the queen of spices but she does need her courtiers to function effectively.
