The health condition geographic tongue is an oral affliction that develops in men and women all over the world. It is a condition that affects both children and adults. Many parents have rashed their children to the doctor, provided when irregular red or salmon-colored areas have developed on their child's tongue, seemingly from now. While these symptoms may look like the start of some severe infection, the condition is not anything to be concerned about and is more common in children than in adults, with female children being more affected overall.

While only a doctor can diagnose the condition correctly, parents can become aware of the symptoms and take steps to alleviate them. How do doctors diagnose this condition (sometimes referred to by medical practitioners as geographic tongue) in children, and how can parents consider it from other oral problems, such as thrush?

There are two main characteristics that differ from other oral problems in children. These are the tension of the red patches to migrate all over the surface of the tongue and that it is not caused by yeast. This means that it is not an infection, which is what triggers the white appearance of the tongue in thrush. In addition, while geographical language can be irritated by certain foods or drinks, it is typically not painful, whereas other oral infections are and must be treated by antibiotics in order to eradicate them. Parents who suspect geographic tongue in their child can consult their pediatrician and discover ways to treat the symptoms so that they appear less often.

Once parents have identified it in their child or have had it diagnosed by their child's doctor, there are steps they can take to help soothe the mild-to-moderate irritation. Since most of the pain is caused when the surface of the tongue comes into contact with spicy, vinegary, or acidic diets, parents can avoid offering their child foods such as grapefruit, oranges, pickles, and zesty snacks. While a bland diet is not necessary, parents should be aware of their child's eating habits if this has been diagnosed. In infusions or toddlers, if a child seems to be finicky about his or her food or sees uncomfortable with fruit or fruit juices that have a high acidic content, this should alert the parents to the possibility of geographic tongue while some children may actually outgrow the condition, once it appears or has been discovered, it returns without a definite pattern through the individual's lifetime, especially if the condition is common within the family.
