Athlete’s foot is caused due to a fungal infection and many people want to know whether there is natural cure for it. The good news is that there are several natural remedies for the treatment of athlete’s foot.

Natural Cure for Athlete’s Foot:

o Tea Tree Oil: It contains elements called terpenoids, which are believed to have antiseptic and antifungal activity and hence finds use in the treatment of Athlete’s foot. Tea Tree oils provide relief from itching. This is considered to be because of its contribution in the histamine process.

o Sosa: The herb sosa (Solanum chrysotrichum) has been traditionally used as a remedy for athlete’s foot in Mexico as a remedy for athlete’s foot.

o Onion extract: A randomized trial examined the effect of 3 percent (v/v) aqueous onion extract. The results of trials showed that it was very effective against the fungi causing athlete’s foot.

o Garlic extract: Ajoene, a compound found in garlic, has been traditionally used to treat athlete’s foot. It is known to have effective antifungal properties helpful in treating athlete’s foot.

o Rubbing alcohol: It is prepared from a special denaturized alcohol solution and contains 97.5-100 percent by volume of pure, concentrated ethanol (ethyl alcohol). It is used as an antiseptic against fungi. Topical application of rubbing alcohol, after bathing, over the affected area will aid the killing of fungi on the surface of the skin. Additionally, soaking the feet in water consisting of 70 percent rubbing alcohol will help in drying the skin and kill the fungus. Hydrogen Peroxide can be used instead of rubbing alcohol to kill the fungus causing the infection. However, both are ineffective against spores.

o Vinegar: It has been found to be effective against the fungus and also against spores.

o Baking soda: Topical application of baking soda paste or sprinkling baking soda in shoes is believed to treat athlete’s foot by changing pH value.

o Epsom salts: Soaking the feet in a solution of Epsom salts in warm water is believed to help. This salt is believed to change the osmotic balance of the water so that less water is absorbed by the skin resulting in reduction of the pruning effect due to prolonged exposure of skin to fresh water. It softens the affected skin, so that antifungal medications can penetrate deeper and act more effectively.

Prevention is better than cure. Hence, it is very important to dry the feet well after bathing since fungi thrive in moist conditions.
