The more common of these side effects have been noted as gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, confusion, tiredness and sedation. In rare cases hair loss have also been noted. In very rare cases the herb has caused photosensitivity. This can lead to sensitivity to light and even sunburn in cases that would not normally cause them. In relation to this recent studies have shown that St John's Wort can react with light to produce free radicals, molecules that can damage the cells of the body. These can react with vital proteins in the eye causing damage. Extracts from St John's Wort may prove useful in estimating alcoholism as well although there are no studies to support this as of yet.

Other herbal depression cures include SAM-e and 5-HTP although these have not been shown as effective as St John's Wort. 5-HTP is an amino acid that allows your body to increase levels of a certain mood-related neurotransmitter, Serotonin, in your brain. Low serotonin levels have been linked to depression.
