An important step in reducing edema is to decrease lymphatic congestion. This is a basic instruction of clearing major lymph node groups to improve lymphatic flow throughout the body.

This is the first step of performing Manual Lymph Drainage (otherwise known as MLD). MLD encourages the flow of lymph fluid out of the involved, congested area. MLD involves special hand strokes to move lymph fluid to healthy lymph nodes where it can drain. Lymphedema massage differs from a conventional muscle massage as the amount of pressure applied is very light and the hands do not slide over the skin but move and gently stretch the skin.

There are approximately 500-700 lymph nodes throughout the body. These lymph nodes are spread out with clusters of lymph nodes (regional) located at the head/neck, axilla (armpit), and groin/pelvis areas. Lymph fluid flows toward its regional lymph node. These regional lymph node areas must be cleared prior to performing MLD techniques. The lymphatic system is located just under the skin therefore light pressure is used to clear the area.

Approximately half of the nodes are located in the middle of the body – stomach or abdominal cavity; about 300 lymph nodes are located in the neck, 100 are near the axilla/armpit, and 100 are in the groin.

You will begin the lymph node clearing at your neck, or “terminus.” You can be in a lying down or sitting position. Place your flat fingers at the side of your neck just above the collarbone. Crossing your hands may allow you to perform this more comfortably. Stretch the skin, stroking down and in toward your collarbone in a half circular motion. Repeat this 10 times.

The next area to be massaged is the axilla or armpit. Place your palm against your uninvolved underarm. Gently stretch the skin toward your collarbone in a half-circular motion. Repeat 10 times.

The next area to receive clearing is the groin. Place the palm of your hand at the groin along the underwear line of your leg. Perform a scooping type stroke with pressure directed toward your belly. Repeat this 10 times.

Another important part of lymph node clearing is deep abdominal breathing. When performing deep abdominal breathing correctly, the lymph vessels in the abdomen become stimulated by the diaphragm contractions and this assist in moving lymph fluid. To perform deep breathing, place your palms on your stomach. Slowly breathe deeply in through your nose, allowing stomach to rise more than your chest. Breathe out slowly allowing the stomach to flatten. Perform deep breathing slowly, in a relaxed position, and repeat 10 times. You can perform deep breathing throughout the day.

Thеrе’ѕ nо denуing that we’re all slowlу going back tо nature. And I mеаn thаt literallу. People nоwadays are starting to live sіmpler and heаlthier by going back to the bаsics. How baѕic? Well, a lot of people turning to herbs аs an alternatіve waу of healing. Herbаl mediсine hаs bееn arоund for centuries. According to Stеvеn Chasens, аn hеrbalist, “Herbal medicine haѕ been uѕed as kіtchen mediсine for thоusands of yеars, and whіlе оur body’s respоnse to these natural treаtments hаs not chаngеd, we now have more global chоices thаn еvеr.” Pleaѕe keep in mind, however, that not all herbal ѕupplementѕ arе appropriate for аll peоple, sо chеck with уоur doctor to see іf you’re іn the сlear. Be sure to conѕult your personal physician before mаking major changes tо your dіet. Always practіce precautionarу measures before uѕіng аnу of thеsе herbs. Consult wіth a medical professional fоr the best waу of using them. Thiѕ warning іѕ is especiallу fоr pregnant women, breaѕtfeeding mothers, pеoplе taking blood thinners, people with high blood preѕѕure, etc.
